The EC has launched a consultation, until 8 October, on sustainable corporate governance (SCG) including future legislation on mandatory due diligence (MDD). The consultation draws on two EC studies published this year, one on due diligence requirements through the supply chain; the other on directors’ duties and sustainable corporate governance. Based on feedback from this assessment, the EC will launch, before the end of this year, a general public consultation which will inform the future legislation, expected early 2021. The EC MDD initiative will be the focus of the 5th annual European Justice Stakeholders Forum online plenary, 3rd December. (See EJSF news below for more information.)

As part of its wider sustainability agenda, the EC has launched a specific initiative to improve sustainability in the cocoa sector. A new multi-sector dialogue, bringing together key representatives including from the Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana and EU institutions will meet between October 2020 and July 2021 to discuss and make recommendations to advance sustainability across the cocoa supply chain. Priorities include halting deforestation and eliminating child labour.
