‘Rule of Law in Europe’

On 28 February, the European Parliament voted to approve Commission action to preserve judicial independence in Poland and protect the rule of law in Europe. Last December the Commission initiated the so-called Article 7 (1) procedure for the first time concluding that the Polish situation presented a clear risk of a serious breach of the rule of law as one of the core EU values set out in Article 2 of the Treaty on the EU. Meanwhile, the Commission is preparing a new initiative aimed at further strengthening the rule of law in Europe. This initiative, announced by Commission President Juncker in his State of the Union address last September, is due to be presented by the end of this year.
