The Commission has published proposals for opening trade negotiations with the US on conformity assessment and on elimination of tariffs for industrial goods. This follows the joint statement agreed last July by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and US President Donald Trump. The European Parliament has, however, issued a draft resolution asking the EU Council not to endorse the Commission’s proposals.  Rapporteur German MEP Bernd Lange’s text is critical of existing US tariffs on steel and aluminium and of US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, suggesting that the EU make ratification and implementation of the Paris Agreement a pre-condition to the conclusion of all EU trade agreements.
