The EP has also been vocal on rising challenges to press freedom in Europe. MEPs condemned attacks on the media in Poland, Hungary and Slovenia and called on the EC to do more to protect journalists in the EU. In her keynote address to an EP debate in March 2021 on the subject, EC Vice President Vera Jourova spoke of press freedom as ‘vital to democracy’. The topic, she said, was a key focus of the European Democracy Action Plan. She referred to two specific forthcoming initiatives: a Recommendation to Member States to improve the safety of journalists, and an initiative to tackle abusive litigation – the so called SLAPP (strategic lawsuits against abusive litigation) cases.
